I sat down and thought about what I really wanted out of my wedding and compared it to the events I’d worked on in the past:

1. In university I led student vacations to Mexico and I learned about dealing with a large group of people who all have needs to be met and questions to answer and how to do this efficiently
2. I’d worked at the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences who put on the Juno Awards (Canada’s version of the Grammy’s) and I learned how to organize thousands in seating charts, secure hotel room blocks, and deal with event vendors
3. For a time I worked at a promotional products company on accounts like GE and Heinz so I knew the importance of branding

And I realized that everything I’d learned applied directly to weddings.

I began planning my wedding as though it was a marketing campaign- everything about it had to be unique, it had to be out of the box, it had to fit with our personalities, it had to have a consistent theme to pull it all together, it had to be attractive to my target audience (I wanted my guests to be raving), it had to please the sponsors (our parents), and it had to please the client (me and my fiance).

Now it might not sound very romantic to think of a wedding this way but with this out of the box approach I was able to accomplish what I set out to do and more.
